When Kettle Corn and Cupcakes Collide

It’s hard to tell from the Southern California heat wave. However, one of my favorite times of year is winding down.

No, not summer.

I’m referring to fair season.

That special time of year where you can get practically anything your mind imagines or your heart desires, deep-fried AND on a stick!

In homage to the LA County Fair, My Delight Cupcakery in Ontario, California has a special, County Fair Menu until October 4. It’s loaded with flavors like Funnel Cake, Caramel Churro, Waffle Cone Sundae, and more.

After careful review of their options, I chose to visit on a Tuesday for their Flavor of the Day, Kettle Corn. It’s a kettle corn flavored cake, topped with kettle corn buttercream, and then garnished with fresh kettle corn.

I confess this was to be my first foray into popcorn and cake. Honestly, I didn’t even know such a combination existed until I came across a Buttered Caramel Popcorn Cake last year. Since then, I’ve noticed more recipes, including popcorn cookies too.

Though curious, I never had the opportunity to dabble before now.

Unlike last time, this mission was well planned.

I arrived about an hour after My Delight Cupcakery opened. With plenty of inventory on hand, I didn’t need to mentally will customers ahead of me to overlook my cupcakes.

Minutes later, I was heading back home with my prized possession. 

Once there, I opted for my usual fork and plate, despite the presence of popcorn. 

The first bite was mostly cake. It tasted of vanilla with a hint of caramel. Its density was similar to pound cake with random toffee colored flecks in the batter.

The next bite had more frosting. It was creamy, buttery, and sweet, almost sugary. Beneath it all was subtle vanilla. 

Then, came my first taste of popcorn…

Crunch. Soft.

My mouth and brain found the consistency strange.

My entire life, popcorn had been all crunch. Soft popcorn meant stale. I knew this popcorn was fresh. The softness was simply from the frosting adhering to the kernels. 

Still, logic could not trump mouthfeel. I didn’t care for the fusion of textures.

Even so, I continued eating. In regards to taste, My Delight Cupcakery did capture the essence of kettle corn with their cupcake. 

In the end, the cupcake reminded how much I will miss the flavors of fair season and the creativity it inspires among others.
