Do you trust that everything happens for a reason?
I believe this is true, whether I understand or not. Though I do confess sometimes the timing is hard to accept.
Such was my quandary the other day. I had set forth on a dessert mission to Redlands, California. Upon reaching my destination, I learned the online menu I previewed was outdated.
As a consumer, my taste buds were disappointed. As a blogger, my story was gone! What was I supposed to write about now?
I left disgruntled. The other options didn’t meet my needs or perhaps I was just too annoyed to make it work.
The next day, with a clearer head I reviewed my list of bakers and shops. I can’t explain exactly how, but the universe guided me to Sugarbird Desserts.
I had wanted to try their baked goods since last year. Back then, they could be found at the Redlands Farmers Market. However, things had changed.
Now, Sugarbird Desserts had partnered with local businesses like Augie’s Coffee House, A la Minute Ice Cream, and Parliament Chocolate to share their sweet treats.
After reviewing the week’s menu, I headed for Parliament Chocolate. Turns out, it was less than 5 minutes away from where I was the day before.
Talk about serendipity.
The shop was small. With a couple of customers already in line, it was a cozy fit.
They weren’t going for ambiance. Instead, the focal point was the wooden display case – one side with Sugarbird bakery items and the other with assorted fine chocolates.
It didn’t take long to select two items. My total was only $5. The brownie was $3 and the bar was $2. I was pleasantly surprised.
Indeed, this roundabout recon was off to a good start.
Once home, I wasted no time.
I started with the Millionaire’s Shortbread. It’s shortbread crust with a caramel middle, and then topped with 70% Dominican Parliament Chocolate that’s sprinkled with fleur de sel.
The buttery shortbread yielded willingly at first bite. It wasn’t crumbly, but dense and soft. An ooze of rich caramel followed. So smooth and sweet, it was some of the best I’ve had.
Knowing how I am with dark chocolate, at that cacao percentage, I thought its intensity might be too strong. Instead, the generous topping was the ideal complement and I loved the touch of sea salt.
In the end, my only complaint was that I purchased just one bar. I yearned for another.
After a glass of milk intermission, I moved on to the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownie. It’s a brownie with fudge frosting, layered with chocolate chip cookie dough that’s topped with more fudge frosting.
I’ll give you a minute to digest that description…
To say this brownie was epic is an understatement.
First, the frosted brownie was sublime on its own. Chocolaty, super moist, and thick fudgy frosting; I could eat an entire pan. Then, Sugarbird adds incredible cookie dough. Not with chips, but chunks of semi-sweet chocolate. And just when you think you’ve reached euphoria, more fudgy frosting!
I don’t think my dessert stomach had ever been so happy.
With that in mind, I give Sugarbird Desserts a perfect 5 star rating. That’s a Frosting Fanatic first!
Perhaps it’s a little assumptive. But I can’t dismiss a gut feeling. The price is right, the quality is good, and the homemade taste is exceptional.
No doubt I’ll think of this adventure next time my plans don’t work out. You never know when the universe has something better in mind.
