My Delight Cupcakery - Chocolate Covered Potato Chip

Yes, friends. The title is a mouthful. No, I’m not making this flavor up. That is not my forte.

Though I do confess on Pinterest I’ve come across Potato Chip Cookies and Chocolate Crack – an addictive dessert bar made with crushed potato chips.

It never occurred to me that someone would combine potato chips with cupcakes.

That is, until I saw the St. Patrick’s Day Menu at My Delight Cupcakery in Ontario, California.

The name Chocolate Covered Potato Chip stood out from the usual holiday assortment of Green Velvet, Thin Mint, and Irish Cream.

Then, I looked at the photo. 

It was a vanilla cake frosted with chocolate buttercream, coated in crushed potato chips, and then garnished with a chocolate-dipped potato chip.

Wondering what the juxtaposition of sweet, salty, and crunchy would be like, I had to try it.

That afternoon, I found myself in an all too familiar position at My Delight Cupcakery. I was in line, mentally willing the patrons in front of me not to order the last Chocolate Covered Potato Chip Cupcakes.

Luckily, the universe was on my side. I scored the sweet and savory cupcake.

At home, I appraised my prize. I decided to leave the chocolate-dipped chip alone and eat around it. 

I took my first bite of cake, frosting, and crushed chips. 

Their vanilla cake was moister than I remembered. Its texture was dense with a nice flavor. The frosting was dark chocolate. Though I recalled it, the intensity still caught me off guard. 

Then came the soft crunch of the potato chips. Its taste was subtler than I expected. 

Perhaps the depth of the chocolate was too much competition.

Nevertheless I continued eating. It was pleasant enough. Moreover as a Frosting Fanatic, I rarely wasted a cupcake.  

In time, I reached the chocolate-dipped potato chip. There was extra chocolate buttercream affixed to the bottom. I popped the piece in my mouth without a second thought, as you often would a chip.

But I wasn’t prepared.

Alternating between waves of bittersweet chocolate and saltiness, my senses were confused. The contrast between flavors was sharp.

In retrospect, maybe smaller bites would’ve been better. 

I reached for a glass of milk, hoping to restore balance.

Overall, I do believe I would have enjoyed a milk chocolate version more, while dark chocolate lovers may be happy with the cupcake as is. 

Although I wouldn’t buy it again, I don’t regret the flavor experience.

This frosted adventure broadened my palate, an essential lesson in my journey as a cupcake connoisseur.
