Top Temptations of 2013

As the year winds down, I can’t help but reflect upon my frosted adventures. My palate developed and my comfort zone was tested, as I tried new bakeries around Southern California.

I decided to prepare the Top Temptations of 2013 to distinguish my favorite experiences.

Though I wanted to take it a step further and list in numerical order, it proved too challenging. Thus, alphabetical will have to suffice.

I set the following guidelines.

  1. 2013 must be the first year I’ve tasted desserts from the establishment
  2. Since faux cronuts are so unique and a separate undertaking, it’s excluded from this category

Now with the formalities out of the way, let’s begin.

Auntie Em’s Kitchen ~ This retro restaurant in Eagle Rock, California made the best Coconut Cupcake I’ve had in my life! Their cupcakes are muffin size with a frosting to cake ratio of 2/3 cake and 1/3 frosting.

Big Man Bakes ~ This bakery in Downtown Los Angeles believes that less is more when it comes to frosting. It’s used to enhance their XL cupcakes. Each cake is tasty enough to stand-alone.

Big Sugar Bakeshop ~ I had my first taste of a Hummingbird Cupcake at this Studio City bakery. I’m now a changed woman, as this southern flavor is a new favorite.

Cookies Your Way ~ Chocolate Covered Cupcakes. Need I say more?

I Like Pie Bake Shop ~ Even a Frosting Fanatic can recognize great pie and this Inland Empire shop has it. From their perfect crusts to their sweet fillings, this bakery made me forget about cupcakes for a while.

Southern Girl Desserts ~ This 2013 Cupcake Wars Winner was so good I visited them twice. They whet my appetite with their Sweet Potato and Pecan Pie cupcakes. Then took it to another level with their Chicken & Waffle and Hennessy & Coke cupcakes.

Sug.ar from the Heart Bakeshop ~ This hidden gem in Lakewood, California bakes with that special ingredient, love. I had the most incredible Carrot Cupcake there. In addition, I tried my first Cookie Butter Cupcake.

SusieCakes ~ As a connoisseur, this was the first cupcake shop to dethrone Sprinkles from the top spot in my stomach. With additional buttercream frosting in the middle of their moist cupcakes, it’s no wonder they had me at first bite.

Sweet & Saucy Shop ~ Breaking standard cupcake etiquette and using a 50/50 frosting and cake ratio, this Long Beach bakery was indeed memorable. Their cake’s flavor and frosting’s texture were exceptional.

The Cake Mamas ~ Great value meets great cupcakes at this shop in Glendora. They offer a variety of creative flavors, along with buttercream and whipped cream frosting.

Congrats to those who made this year’s list!

I’m looking forward to a new year of sweet temptations.
