The Comeback Cupcake

Why is it that a last-minute cupcake run isn’t usually simple with me? In what is becoming my modus operandi, my plans for the day were changed by Twitter, when a bakery that I follow reminded me of their feature flavor.

This time, the culprit was My Delight Cupcakery in Ontario, California. Some of you may recall them from my Cupcake Conundrum. Since that post, they’ve stepped up their game and have introduced several enticing creations.

One such Flavor of the Week was their Banana Foster Cupcake. It’s a caramel cake dipped in rum syrup, filled with banana cream, frosted with rum infused banana buttercream, then topped with caramel and a banana chip.

Of course I had to try it… and of course, there was a bit of a challenge.

By no fault of my own (I swear), my previously scheduled appointment ran behind. I knew it was going to cost me precious cupcake time. However, there was nothing I could do. This put me in a later traffic window. Thus, resulting in an extra delay.

When I arrived at My Delight Cupcakery, it was almost 4:30pm, about an hour later than I had planned. The line was outside of the door – not a good sign. When I advanced inside the shop, their day’s inventory was nearly depleted.

There were only five Banana Foster cupcakes and three sets of customers ahead of me. I mentally claimed my cupcake and willed each person not to touch it.

With one exception, they must have heard my telepathic plea. I left with a Banana Foster Cupcake in hand. Whew!

Once home, I was ready to relax and enjoy. The first bite was not exceptional, but good. The caramel cake was flavorful. However, it could’ve been moister. The buttercream frosting was smooth and sweet. I kept eating.

Was it my imagination or was this cupcake improving with each bite?

By the time I reached the center with a tease of banana cream, I was in love. I took a bite with cake, frosting, banana cream and a banana chip… Oh, my!

I finished the Banana Foster Cupcake and looked at my empty plate with disappointment, cursing myself for not getting another when I had the chance. I saw the reviews from other customers on Twitter. Why hadn’t I taken their word? Why had I exercised restraint? Next time, perhaps less common sense and more foodie sense.

As for My Delight Cupcakery, nice comeback, I feel better about my 3.5 star rating.
