First up on my list, Darla’s Cake Design in Chino Hills, California. I became aware of this bakery through Groupon. Their website photos passed my frosting appraisal and their nearby location was an incentive, so I decided to give them a try.
I ordered their featured item, the Billion Dollar Cupcake as seen on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. It’s a raspberry rosewater cake with fresh raspberries, vanilla cream filling and rosewater frosting with raspberry drizzle.
I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with the culinary uses of rosewater, but I had to do a little research. Cliff Notes version – European and American bakers used rosewater to flavor cakes and cookies until the 19th century, when vanilla flavoring became more popular.
That being said this cupcake lived up to its billionaire title. It was one of the richest desserts I have ever had, especially for being non-chocolate.
I would’ve preferred a moister texture for the cake. However, the frosting helped make up for that. Overall, I enjoyed the blend of flavors and the rosewater added a distinctive touch.
Peanut butter and chocolate were made for each other, so I also ordered their Peanut Butter Cup. It’s a peanut butter cake, with peanut butter chips, topped with peanut butter frosting dipped in chocolate ganache.
As with their raspberry rosewater, I prefer a moister peanut butter cake. However, the generous frosting and rich ganache complemented the cake, providing a decadent taste experience. It was one of the better peanut butter cupcakes I’ve had.
I give Darla’s Cake Design 3.5 out of 5 stars. That’s enough to earn another visit. Maybe next time I’ll try their Rise N’ Shine cupcake with bacon… It was calling my name.
